Somewhere tonight, a waiter will tell a customer to "enjoy your meal," and the customer — reflexively, helplessly — will respond, "you too."

The waiter is not eating. Everyone knows this. It happens anyway.

Dear Friend, if you've ever wished a mail carrier "safe travels" or told a cashier "you too" after they wished a stranger happy birthday — you are not malfunctioning. Your mouth just runs on autopilot faster than your brain can intervene.
